Searching for a Company

When searching for a company or entity using Open Search, there are several approaches you can take:

  1. Using a predefined company in our Knowledge Graph
  2. Creating a custom entity, including multi-entities (companies with multiple subsidiaries or brands)
  3. Using a previously created custom entity

We’ll go through these approaches one by one.

Searching for a Predefined Company

The simplest search in Open Search uses our Corporate Knowledge Graph. Simply start typing the name of the company or entity you’re looking for in the Companies search bar.

💡What is a Knowledge Graph?

The knowledge graph is a corporate knowledge graph that maps companies to their subsidiaires, CEO, website etc. It also gives access to company details such as company description, employee count, legal name etc

Predefined companies will appear as you search in the search box, with their ticker and Financial Instrument Global Identifier (FIGI), if available.

When you find the company you are looking for, select it. Click the company icon to see key company details.

When selecting a predefined company, the company label and company legal name will automatically be selected as keywords for the search. To modify the keywords, click the keyword tage to select the subsidiaries, aliases, the CEO, or founders, or even add custom keywords.

If there is too much noise still, you can exclude keywords from the search and/or disambiguate ambiguous keywords. Learn more about disambiguation and how to use it here.

After modifying company keywords, if you are happy with the search results, you can save the company as a custom entity, making it easy to come back to.

Creating & Saving Custom Entities

Custom entities are entities that are manually created, either from scratch or by modifying a predefined company. This powerful capability enables you to search for anything in our data lake, across all 25 billion documents.

To create a custom entity, type the desired entity name in the Company search box. You can create a custom entity even if a predefined entity with the same name already exists.

From there you can add as many associated keywords as necessary. The manually-input entity label will be automatically included as a keyword in the “Associated keywords” section.

As with the keyword section for predefined companies, with custom entities you can:

  • Add associated keywords
  • Exclude keywords
  • Disambiguate keywords
  • Decide whether the keywords should appear only in the title or the title and text of a document

Multi-Entity Builder

Increase the precision of your search results for companies with multiple subsidiaries or brands. The multi-entity builder allows you to create complex entity structures and define the associated disambiguation logic using the custom entities feature.

To do this, first create a custom entity, then activate the
multi-entity capability as seen in the screenshot below. From there, you can create sub-entities,
disambiguating the keywords as necessary. The sets of excluded and disambiguated
keywords are related to each individual sub-entity. When ready, run the search. All sub-entities will be included in the results.

Once you’re happy with your search, save the entity. You can choose to keep it private or share it with your entire organization.

Searching for a Saved Custom Entity

After saving a custom entity, easily find it again using the Saved Entity search box.
